* Why the 1851 Society?
The original 1803 Ohio Constitution gave to state and local government wide powers of taxation, spending, borrowing and investing in private enterprise. Within forty years Ohio's governments were abusing these fiscal powers, sending the state and many counties deep into debt, while levying taxes the developing economy could not afford. For years the politicians of the day defeated attempts by citizens to restrain their public servants through political means.
Finally, in 1851, the citizens of Ohio reasserted their sovereignty and adopted a new Constitution which returned to the people the power of the public purse. The 1851 Constitution was a rebirth of republican grace for Ohio as the state's governments were for the first time required to balance their budgets, abstain from debt and sever all entanglement with private enterprise.
Our 1851 Society commemorates the vision and will of Ohioans to commit the growth and prosperity of their state to the power of individual liberty, economic freedom and limited government.
