The Buckeye Institute recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of John Ream of Licking County, Ohio, asking the court to overturn the federal government’s ban on the home distilling of spirited beverages and arguing that this ban exceeds Congressional authority under Article I of the U.S. Constitution and violates the Tenth Amendment.

Robert Alt, president and CEO of The Buckeye Institute, will discuss this important case at a forum hosted by The Federalist Society and moderated by Andrew M. Grossman, a senior legal fellow at The Buckeye Institute and partner in BakerHostetler’s Washington, D.C. office.

Litigation Update: Ream v. U.S. Department of Treasury
Is Home-Distilling Commerce?

Tuesday, April 23, at 2:00 p.m. ET

John Ream is an engineer by professional training and owner of Trek Brewing Company, which creates craft beers in Newark, Ohio. With the help of The Buckeye Institute, Mr. Ream is suing the U.S. Department of Treasury to overturn the federal ban on home distilling, which he would like to pursue as a hobby at home for personal use. However, if he did so, he would be subject to a felony conviction, $10,000 in fines, and five years in prison. Now that calls for a stiff drink!
