The Buckeye Institute to Join City Club Panel on Senate Bill 83: Ohio’s Higher Education Enhancement Act

Schedule

May 12, 2023 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
The City Club of Cleveland
850 Euclid Avenue, 2nd Floor
Cleveland, OH, 44114

If passed, the Ohio Higher Education Enhancement Act would lead to changes in the state’s public universities and colleges. Supporters of Senate Bill 83 believe the bill will strengthen First Amendment rights and reshape Ohio’s higher education system to meet the needs of the 21st century. Critics say the bill is an attempt “to micromanage public–and to an extent, private–colleges and universities on a variety of issues, most of which are rooted in the culture wars.”

The Buckeye Institute’s Greg Lawson joined a panel discussion hosted by the City Club of Cleveland with both proponents and opponents of Senate Bill 83 and what it could mean for higher education in Ohio. Other panelists were Senator Nickie J. Antonio (D-23), minority leader, Ohio Senate; George Dent, professor emeritus of law, Case Western Reserve University; and Deborah C. Smith, Ph.D., president, Kent State Chapter, American Association of University Professors; and professor of philosophy, Kent State University. The panel was moderated by Glenn Forbes, host and producer, Ideastream Public Media.
