The Buckeye Institute Named Finalist for State Policy Network’s Prestigious Bob Williams Award
Jun 16, 2023The Buckeye Institute is a finalist for the prestigious Bob Williams Award for Outstanding Policy Achievement in the category of Best State-Based Litigation, which celebrates think tanks doing exceptional work. The Buckeye Institute’s cases—particularly Schaad v. Alder—which challenge Ohio’s pandemic-era emergency municipal income tax system were selected among the entries.
“We are honored even to be nominated as a finalist for the Bob Williams Awards for Outstanding Policy Achievement for The Buckeye Institute’s work relentlessly advancing our cases to protect Ohio taxpayers from unconstitutional tax schemes,” said Robert Alt, president and chief executive officer of The Buckeye Institute, who also personally argued the Schaad v. Alder case before Ohio’s Supreme Court. “Considering that some 41 out of 50 states levy income taxes combined with the dramatic rise in remote work arrangements and the potential ripple effects across the country as a result of this decision, all eyes should be on Ohio as we await a ruling in Buckeye’s truly consequential cases on these matters.”
Voting is open only to those attending State Policy Network’s Annual Meeting in Chicago where the winners will be announced at SPN’s Celebration of Success Dinner in late August.
Voting is open now and closes Friday, June 30, at 11:59 p.m. ET. If you are eligible, we would be honored to have your vote—cast a ballot for the underdog, as our Buckeye shop continually makes an outsize impact. Win or lose, we are honored that our work was noticed, and would be tickled to earn the top prize!
Schaad v. Alder is one of Buckeye’s six municipal income tax cases. The Buckeye Institute’s five other related cases are: Buckeye v. Kilgore, Morsy v. Dumas, Curcio v. Hufford, Kresevic v. Chittok, and Denison v. Kilgore.
The award for best state-based litigation recognizes organizations whose litigative efforts at the state and local level help to advance the cause of free markets and federalism. The Bob Williams Awards were named in honor of State Policy Network’s iconic policy maven—the late Bob Williams—and are presented yearly at SPN’s Annual Meeting.
